Kindle screen vs IPad or any other LCD screens, the glare test
Is Amazon’s commercial TV Advertising about Kindle e-ink pearl screen and IPad exaggerated ? Is it possible that we couldn’t read from IPad in the outdoor or in the direct sunlight at all ! I have do the glare test and here is the result. Enjoy ! (click at the photo to see the actual size)

Kindle screen vs IPad or any other LCD screens glare test in the outdoor direct sunlight
I took these pictures from my deck in the direct sunlight and apparently it’s not possible to read from my IPad – the LCD becomes the black mirror !
Kindle DX Graphite’s e-ink pearl screen works fine in the direct sunlight condition.
While with the maximize screen brightness on IPad still I cannot read it comfortably in the direct sunlight.
So it works as advertised ! Kindle DX Graphite is much more proper ebook reader for the outdoor reader. But admit it ! I don’t think much of people do the reading in that direct sunlight (at least you have to sit under the umbrella or shading. So here is my second test !
Kindle screen vs IPad or any other LCD screens glare test in the semi outdoor
I took these photos in my outdoor sitting area with the shading and the result is :
IPad is still very hard to read with the glare. Better than reading in the direct sunlight but I think it’s healthy to read in this condition.
IPad is awfully unreadable in the semi outdoor. While Kindle DX Graphite is absolutely fine is the semi outdoor reading.
I also took the video to show how is it look in the motion. I think it shows clearly how IPad is not fitted with the semi outdoor reading condition. Perhaps you are not that outdoor or semi-outdoor reader most of time I spend my reading inside the building, in the coffee place, my study room and my living space. Will IPad fit for these task ? To answer this question I have do another glare test.
Kindle screen vs IPad or any other LCD screens glare test in the indoor space with the natural light
I took these photos and video in my study room which is open for the natural light to comes into the room. I have sufficient natural light to read without the need for artificial light. I think this is the light condition that you are found in the restaurant or most of the public spaces.
And the result is Kindle DX Graphite works fine in this room. Very easy and friendly to read. While with the IPad I have to admitted that with its LCD screen, IPad has crisper texts than Kindle but there are still some glares on its screen.
With the indoor space, IPad also works fine. If you can fine the proper place to avoid the glare IPad has a crisper display than Kindle.
I’ve also took the photos of Kindle and IPad with the artificial light in the indoor to show the glare on both of ebook readers. This type of glare happens all the time and it’s very annoying even with the Kindle. It forces me to find the proper seat to read my ebook by avoid the direct omni lights!
Who said Kindle screen doesn’t have glares ? It has ! Maybe as not as much as IPad screen but it also created unpleasant reading moments.
I have also took the video to show the glares on both of these ebook reader screen below.
Kindle reading screen vs IPad or any other LCD screens glare test in the dark indoor space.
This is my final test. For someone whose spend their time in the limited space or do the reading in their bedroom might find IPad is more suitable for your lifestyle ! why ? because with the LCD reading screen, no artificial light needed. Just you and IPad and that’s it ! This could be very useful for before bedtime reading (Amazon claims that reading from LCD screen can caused you an unpleasant sleeping moments but … who cares !)
With the Kindle DX Graphite. The lamp is needed to read your Kindle in the indoor dark room but none for IPad.
I’ve also took the video to show how useful IPad is in the low lighted condition room. but it’s in the vertical !
So to conclude, I think both of these gadget has the different strength points. For the old fashioned ereader, I think Kindle is the best in its line. and for the new tablet world IPad is still the unbeatable tablet even almost a year released now. If you are looking for one decent ebook reader. I still think Kindle is the best choice don’t go for the color LCD ebook reader. You won’t happy with the glares. If you decide to go with the tablet go with IPad !

My Kindle DX Graphite vs IPad as ebook reader: Which one you should buy
First of all, I would like to say I know that this is not the equitable way to compare the Apple IPad with the actual ebook reader as Kindle DX Graphite. But I think I read a lot about people get the tablet to use as their ebook reader especially this year with the immense of tablets release. So I think maybe I could share my ebook reading experience on both devices. I hope you’d find my article handy in some ways, especially to anyone who is making a decision between tablet and actual ebook reader. Here is my list about what Kindle on IPad can or cannot do, compared with actual Kindle DX Graphite. And what Kindle DX Graphite do or cannot do compared to Kindle on IPad:

1. You can make highlights or add notes while reading on Kindle on IPad but you can not make it show as lists as same as “my clipping” function on Kindle DX Graphite. But on the other hand, the note adding for on Kindle DX Graphite is very hard to use. Its keyboard is too small and not works at all ! I use highlight feature a lot when I found something that inspired me but not likely for note adding.
2. You cannot retweet or share your highlights with your friends via Facebook or Twitter. (But I don’t think this is the very useful feature unless you would like to copy it to your status page and copy it to use as quotation later)
3. You cannot read e-magazine on IPad. I know this is kind of like an main feature besides its pearl e-ink reader, the very cheap e-magazine. But after use Kindle DX Graphite for a while, I found that I spend most of my time on books not magazine. and I also think magazine is look great on IPad especially with the interactive & multimedia design added.
4. You cannot read IPad in the direct light – actually if you would like to read ebook on IPad, you have to sit or stay in the lowlight or a very darkroom. A little tiny spotlight can caused you an unpleasant IPad reading experience. I have my experience to share on this issue. On a few days ago, I read half of Get off my bus with my Kindle DX Graphite and I was really happy with it. very easy on my eyes and very light weight to carry. But today I tried to read the second of the book in the coffee house with my IPad and I could not read it. It was too much bright and lights. Even the page turning, two-column, built-in dictionary and highlight function are superb, but I still cannot read it. just a few page and then I gave up.
5. Text to speech – I did not use it as much as I expected. If you live in the big city and your major way of travel is by the public transportation, I think you will love this feature. Let the Kindle read to you while you traveling. (But I preferred music ;])
6. Free 3G ! – This is very useful feature especially for someone who lives in the 3G service area. But It’s quite sad to me, After a few months of Kindle DX Graphite using, My Kindle DX Graphite’s connection to 3G is broken ! and I could not yet find the time to send it to Amazon to fix it.
Here is what I love about Kindle on IPad : IPad’s touchscreen is the key. It’s very friendly, very easy to use, page flipping, note adding, built-in dictionary – just tap on the word you didn’t know, and its multitasking – I can listening to my music while reading with the IPad unlikely with Kindle DX Graphite, I know you I can use this MP3 player with my Kindle DX Graphite too. But when I tried this feature while I was reading. I found it was kind of reduced the total performance of my Kindle DX Graphite.
And this is What I love about KIndle DX Graphite : Its pearl e-ink screen – It gives me sense of relaxation, very friendly to my eyes. The font size adjustment and also the column width.
To conclude, If it possible, get both ! tablet is very fun and very useful (I use it as my notebook replacement, occasionally). Kindle is quite something, especially when reading it in your very relax weekend. But if you have to pick one. Don’t expect IPad to be as good as Kindle DX Graphite interms of ebook reader.
If you decide to go with Kindle DX, There are two models available now, The old white Kindle DX – the slower speed and the old technology screen and the new Kindle DX Graphite – the faster, the better screen. Both of these are around 50 USD difference. if you ask me, go with the new model !

My all day long use of IPad and the reason I should read more Kindle books
Since the day I’ve got IPad, my Kindle DX Graphite has left alone ! … It’s been a while since my IPad arrived and since then we becomes a very close friend. I use it all day long from morning till night.
IPad for the morning – I read the technology news feed from Pulse and Flud, check some local news from my local news feeder, then email checking and of course Facebook time !
IPad for late morning – since I have my Apple bluetooth keyboard. I use IPad with Mac bluetooth keyboard as my Macbook Air replacement. It’s lighter and IPad sound quality is way better than Macbook Air or any other IPod touch, IPod classic and any other MP3 player I own. It’s matched very well with my AKG K702 full size headphone. I also use IPad as my sketch book and quick note taking.
IPad for lunch - It’s time for relax ! A little of Facebook update and IPad games.
IPad for afternoon – Work again ! Most of my IPad use are for document reading and editing or email communication.
IPad for evening – Sometime I eat alone and watching Youtube while eating is a superb experience.
IPad for night - I spend most of my before bed time with IPad. To update my Facebook status and read some Kindle books. It’s very good. No need for lamp at night, perfect for night reading.
I have been in this circle around month or two now and I started to feel depress and with Migraine attack sometimes. I think this happened because of my overuse of LCD screen ! [I am also spend around 4 - 8 hours per day with LED screen, LCD screen for working, TV watching, and XBOX gaming].
One of the great quality that IPad can not offer is the calmness and the old time relaxation. When I read from my Kindle DX Graphite, I found that I feel so calm and no need to hurry, no need for speed up page turning, while with the IPad I found myself read faster but not really into the book. This coming weekend, how about bring Kindle with you and spend all day long in your favorite park or your best coffee house ?

Kindle DX Graphite page turing vs IPad’s iBooks page turning
Returning to Kindle DX Graphite after using IPad for a while, I have noticed that one of the Kindle DX Graphite’s thing that I don’t like (and also for the Kindle 3) is the page turning. With the Apple IPad, you can see all of the pages easily with one tab and also one tab button with the contents page returning. While with the Kindle DX Graphite, If you would like to see the contents page you have to click and wait for drop down menu and choose “go to” and then add page number, cover, or contents. I didn’t say IPad is better than Kindle. But two of this ebook reader have a different navigator systems. IPad is the image navigator base which provides very fast accessing to the complex data. While Kindle DX Graphite is text base navigator system which is slower. Maybe these two navigator system reflect the different approaches of these two ebook reader. Kindle DX Graphite for text base reader and IPad for magazine reader.

Reading and watching from LCD can make you sad
Yesterday I had Migraine attacked ! Most of the time this happened because I let no rest to my eyes. Most of the day especially, the holiday like this. I spend too much time on LCD screen – watching the Bluray from HDTV, playing with IPad, working on documents using Macbook air laptop, playing Xbox 360 with HDTV. All of this can caused the eyes strain. I think most of people in nowadays shared the same experience as mine. The way out ? Give your eyes a rest ! Carry LCD tablet with you all day long even in bed before sleep is not healthy. I think I have to minimize my LCD screen using and more of Kindle DX Graphite, less on IPad magazine !

Not so good in bed, IPad vs Kindle DX Graphite : in bed reading experience
I am the one whose spend so much time on reading in bed before my sleep and in my spare time. Especially in this holiday season. Today I’d like to share my in bed reading experience for anyone who is looking for in bed companion ebook reader.
In bed with the IPad : It’s very hard to read from IPad in bed. Because of its weight, I can not hardly hold it with my hand. And also with the multitouch gesture navigator which kind of need you to use both of your hand. It’s also impossible to turn to the next page with your thumb. To read IPad with iBooks application I think you’ll need to use both of your hands which is not so comfortable while lay on your bed. But the good thing about reading IPad is you will need no light to read it ! But if you use it for a clip watching such as Youtube. I think it works just fine. Just disable the auto rotation mode and you can enjoy your best clip watching moment.

In bed with the Kindle DX Graphite : I know that most of people might say if you want to read light and casually, pick Kindle 3. But with my Kindle DX Graphite with the bigger screen, I think it suites me well in term of ebook reader for everydaylife. With the Kindle DX Graphite I am able to hold it with my one hand with the ability to turn to the next page easily. It’s also lighter than IPad. But the bad thing about DXG is that you’ll need side bed lamp or Kindle DX Graphite reading light to read from it.

As you can see from the photos. Kindle DX Graphite is the text based reader while the IPad is multimedia reader. So it’s less excitement on Kindle DX Graphite. This is not the Kindle’s flaw. It’s just the way it was made for.

Kindle DX Graphite vs IPad, which one is the best e-magazine reader
I think person who is interesting in my posting is the one who is in the IPad vs Kindle DX Graphite crossroad. Before you’ll getting one of these greatest ebook readers of all time. Let me share my e-book reading experience with you. I am both IPad and Kindle DX Graphite owner.
Reading PDF magazine on Kindle DX Graphite and Kindle 3 , Is it possible ?

I had pick Kindle DX Graphite before IPad for my first ebook reader. The main reason is that I believe in the “Pearl” E-ink reader screen and it was not disappointed me. It’s very easy for my eyes. I think Kindle DX Graphite has created my best ebook reading experience. Maybe as good as read from the physical books or perhaps better. Most of my Kindle Dx Graphite used was to read PDFs and text base fictions and non fictions. But one thing that disappointed me was Kindle magazine. I believe for people who love to read magazine, the images and colors mean a lot. It can created the freshness and creative feeling while reading Kindle magazine was not that quite the best experience. Most of them was the text based magazine most of the photo has been resized or removed. (I used to subscribed to read Times, Pop matters, New york book reviews and One story from my Kindle DX Graphite). And Reading PDF magazine from your Kindle DX Graphite was not good at all – It was readable but not impress me.

So after a while I decided to bought my first IPad to be my e-magazine reader and I was really happy with it. With the Wired magazine format, the e-magazine has a very long way to go as a new type of media presentation with the combinations of multimedia. The vivid color of IPad screen was thrilled me. But like many other reviewer has mentioned, with the LED/LCD IPad screen. You can use it as your main ebook reader. It’s too intense to your eyes to stare at it for a long time. and of course you cannot read it outdoor.

So right now I am both Kindle and IPad owner and I use it for the different occasions. For the IPad I use it for magazine reader, PDF magazine reader, RSS feed reader, video watching which more merge with my daily life basis. While with Kindle DX Graphite, I use it as my major ebook reader. Most of it as for my weekend at coffee house or my vacation at some hideaway resorts. I don’t know why but with IPad, I think I turn the page so quick and it feels very intense sometimes. Which unlike the Kindle DX Graphite, I felt more relax and peaceful.

What do you think could IPad wins all ? If you ask me don’t think so. Reading from the Kindle is so much better experience (But if we can have touchscreen and switchable between color and black and white screen on the next Kindle (Kindle 4 perhaps ?). It will be very awesome ebook reader. Watch this Could IPad be book and Kindle replacement video and maybe you’ll find the answer.
